Thiarloch Women’s Hiking Kilt

Take Highland style beyond the beaten path with the Thiarloch Women’s Hiking Kilt. Named from the Gaelic for “Western Lake,” Thiarloch was inspired by Scotland’s rugged western landscapes and the spirit of outdoor exploration. Its cool blue, green, black, and white tones evoke mountain lakes, forested hillsides, and open trail.

Built from lightweight, breathable, quick-drying microfiber, this women’s hiking kilt is made for active days outdoors. The shorter women’s cut gives you plenty of freedom of movement while keeping the look unmistakably Scottish.

It’s a natural choice for hiking, camping, travel, Highland Games, Celtic festivals, outdoor concerts, and everyday wear.

Trail-Ready Comfort

The Thiarloch Women’s Hiking Kilt is designed to move with you. The lightweight fabric helps keep things comfortable on warm days and dries quickly after changing weather, creek crossings, or long hours on the trail.

Compared with a traditional wool kilt, the microfiber construction is easier to pack, easier to care for, and better suited to active outdoor use.

Customize Your Fit

Choose your preferred waist size and hem length, then add practical upgrades to suit the way you plan to wear it. Available options include:

  • Buckle closure
  • Hidden side pockets
  • Belt loops

Hidden pockets give you convenient storage for a phone, wallet, or keys without adding bulky exterior cargo pockets, while belt loops make it easy to add a belt or other accessories.

Made for Adventure

The Thiarloch tartan was created around the connection between Highland tradition and outdoor exploration. Its modern color palette feels just as at home with hiking boots and a technical top as it does with kilt hose and traditional accessories.

Wear it for:

  • Hiking and trail walking
  • Camping
  • Backpacking
  • Travel
  • Highland Games
  • Scottish and Celtic festivals
  • Outdoor concerts
  • Road trips
  • Casual weekends
  • Everyday adventures

Care Instructions

You can machine wash your kilt with similar colors on cold; tumble dry on low or hang to dry. For the sharpest pleats, press with an iron on 75% heat setting.

Please Note: If your kilt has leather buckle straps, we recommend dry cleaning as the leather will dry out with machine washing/drying.

Kilt Options Explained

Get to know your kilts!

What are sewn-down pleats? Do I need belt loops? Great questions! Find out below.

Check out our Size Guide below.

All Sport Kilts are pleated, but you can give your kilt that custom fitted shape with a leaner profile by having us sew down the pleats.

The first 4-5 inches of pleats (measured from the waistband) are sewn down along the knife edge of the pleat (vertically). This provides a more refined look and makes for easier care and pressing.

Please Note: We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length. Please see our Size Guide below before ordering and make sure to measure carefully!

You can add two 1″ wide black leather straps and nickle-plated buckles to the opening end of your Sport Kilt. A functional, traditional looking adjustable double strap. You can also choose a Nylon Buckle Strap option as well.

While all Sport Kilts are secured with Velcro at the waistband, you can give your kilt that custom look (and added security) by adding buckles and straps.

Please Note: If you opt for the Buckles and straps, we HIGHLY recommend adding the sewn-down-pleats option as they compliment each other. We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length.

Nylon Buckle Straps

Leather Buckle Straps

Yes! We can fringe the opening side of your Sport Kilt for extra flair.

Please Note: We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length. Please see our Size Guide below before ordering and make sure to measure carefully!

Sport Kilt fringe

Yes! We can add 2 hidden side pockets to your Sport Kilt. You won’t even know they’re there unless you’re looking for them, or you’ve got your hands in your pockets. A great custom option for those that have to have pockets on their kilts!

Please Note: It will take us a couple of days to customize your kilt with pockets before your order ships. We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length.

Sport Kilt pockets

Although you don’t need a belt to hold up your kilt, we’ll be glad to add ’em so you can wear your favorite belt.

Belt loops can also be used to thread your sporran “chain-belt” through. This is the traditional use of belt loops on a kilt.

Please Note: We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length.

The Perfect Fit

Finding your waist size

Using a measuring tape, wrap it around your waist where you’d like the top of your kilt to sit. Don’t hold in your stomach. This measurement is usually 2″ larger than the size of your pants. You might consider giving yourself an extra inch, or so, for comfort. Take your waist measurement (in actual inches) and see where it falls in our size grid below.

Finding your length

The ideal kilt length for you: While kneeling, measure from the top of your waist (where you’d wear your kilt) to the floor. Some say your kilt should just brush against the ground when you are kneeling. Of course personal preference is the rule! Have it YOUR way.

Please Note:

All mini kilts have a standard length of 14″.
