Borealis Black Hiking Kilt
Built for the trail but sharp enough for everyday wear, the Borealis Black Hiking Kilt combines a dark, understated tartan with the freedom and comfort that make hiking in a kilt such a great experience.
The Borealis Black pattern blends deep black and charcoal tones with subtle green and gray striping, giving it a rugged look that works especially well outdoors. It has enough tartan character to stand out, but the darker palette keeps it versatile and easy to pair with hiking boots, trail shoes, black shirts, and technical layers.
Made for Movement
The Borealis Black Hiking Kilt is designed for people who actually plan to move in it. The open construction gives you excellent airflow and unrestricted stride length, making it a comfortable alternative to hiking pants or shorts.
It’s a great choice for:
- Hiking
- Camping
- Backpacking
- Highland Games
- Celtic festivals
- Outdoor concerts
- Travel
- Road trips
- Casual weekends
- Everyday wear
Whether you’re climbing switchbacks, walking a festival, or just heading out for the day, this kilt gives you traditional style without sacrificing mobility.
Lightweight, Comfortable, and Practical
The modern fabric keeps the kilt lighter and easier to care for than a traditional wool kilt. It is designed to hold its shape and pleats while remaining comfortable for long days outdoors.
The dark Borealis Black tartan also makes it especially practical for trail use, since dust and dirt are less noticeable than on brighter tartans.
Adjustable Fit
Sport Kilt’s hiking design uses an easy, adjustable waistband so you can get a secure fit without feeling restricted.
That flexibility is especially useful on long hikes, travel days, or anytime you want a little more room and comfort than a rigid waistband provides.
Customize It Your Way
Depending on your setup, the Borealis Black Hiking Kilt can be ordered with practical upgrades such as:
- Hidden side pockets
- Belt loops
- Buckle closures
- Custom length options
Hidden pockets are especially useful on the trail for carrying a phone, wallet, keys, or other small essentials without adding bulky cargo styling.
Easy to Wear. Easy to Care For.
Unlike traditional wool kilts, the Borealis Black Hiking Kilt is made for regular use. The modern fabric is easy to maintain and ideal for travel, hiking, and active wear.
Pair it with a black performance shirt and hiking boots for a clean trail-ready look, or add kilt hose and traditional accessories when you want more Highland character.

Care Instructions
You can machine wash your kilt with similar colors on cold; tumble dry on low or hang to dry. For the sharpest pleats, press with an iron on 75% heat setting.
Please Note: If your kilt has leather buckle straps, we recommend dry cleaning as the leather will dry out with machine washing/drying.

The Perfect Fit
Finding your waist size
Using a measuring tape, wrap it around your waist where you’d like the top of your kilt to sit. Don’t hold in your stomach. This measurement is usually 2″ larger than the size of your pants. You might consider giving yourself an extra inch, or so, for comfort. Take your waist measurement (in actual inches) and see where it falls in our size grid below.
Finding your length
The ideal kilt length for you: While kneeling, measure from the top of your waist (where you’d wear your kilt) to the floor. Some say your kilt should just brush against the ground when you are kneeling. Of course personal preference is the rule! Have it YOUR way.
