The Thompson Ancient Hunting tartan was designed in 1958 for Lord Thomson of Fleet. Though newer than many historic clan tartans, its hunting designation reflects the longstanding Scottish connection between tartan, landscape, family heritage, and the outdoors. (Sport Kilt)

Sewn-Down Pleats
For a cleaner and more tailored silhouette, choose sewn-down pleats.
The first 4–5 inches of the pleats are stitched vertically along the knife edge from the waistband. This creates a more refined profile and also makes the pleats easier to maintain and press. (Sport Kilt)
Buckle Closure
Add two 1-inch black leather straps with nickel-plated buckles for extra security and a more traditional appearance. Nylon buckle straps are also available.
The buckles supplement the standard Velcro waistband rather than replacing it. Sport Kilt recommends pairing buckle straps with sewn-down pleats for a particularly polished finished look. (Sport Kilt)
Hidden Side Pockets
Need room for a phone, wallet, or keys? Add two hidden side pockets.

Belt Loops

Easy to Care For
The Thompson Original Sport Kilt is designed for regular use.
Machine wash it cold with similar colors, then tumble dry on low or hang to dry. For especially sharp pleats, Sport Kilt recommends pressing the fabric at approximately 75% iron heat. (Sport Kilt)
If you choose leather buckle straps, dry cleaning is recommended because repeated machine washing and drying can dry out the leather. (Sport Kilt)
Find the Right Fit
For waist sizing, measure around the exact point where you want the top of your kilt to sit. Sport Kilt notes that this measurement is commonly around 2 inches larger than your normal pants size, and you may want to allow a little additional room for comfort. (Sport Kilt)
For length, kneel and measure from your preferred waistband position to the floor. Traditionally, the hem should come close to brushing the ground while kneeling, although personal preference ultimately determines the right length. (Sport Kilt)
Standard sizing currently includes Small through XXL, with waist ranges from 25 to 54 inches and custom length available. (Sport Kilt)

All Sport Kilts are pleated, but you can give your kilt that custom fitted shape with a leaner profile by having us sew down the pleats.
The first 4-5 inches of pleats (measured from the waistband) are sewn down along the knife edge of the pleat (vertically). This provides a more refined look and makes for easier care and pressing.

You can add two 1″ wide black leather straps and nickle-plated buckles to the opening end of your Sport Kilt. A functional, traditional looking adjustable double strap. You can also choose a Nylon Buckle Strap option as well.
While all Sport Kilts are secured with Velcro at the waistband, you can give your kilt that custom look (and added security) by adding buckles and straps.
Please Note: If you opt for the Buckles and straps, we HIGHLY recommend adding the sewn-down-pleats option as they compliment each other. We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length.

Yes! We can add 2 hidden side pockets to your Sport Kilt. You won’t even know they’re there unless you’re looking for them, or you’ve got your hands in your pockets. A great custom option for those that have to have pockets on their kilts!
Please Note: It will take us a couple of days to customize your kilt with pockets before your order ships. We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length.
Although you don’t need a belt to hold up your kilt, we’ll be glad to add ’em so you can wear your favorite belt.
Belt loops can also be used to thread your sporran “chain-belt” through. This is the traditional use of belt loops on a kilt.

The Perfect Fit
Finding your waist size
Using a measuring tape, wrap it around your waist where you’d like the top of your kilt to sit. Don’t hold in your stomach. This measurement is usually 2″ larger than the size of your pants. You might consider giving yourself an extra inch, or so, for comfort. Take your waist measurement (in actual inches) and see where it falls in our size grid below.
Finding your length
The ideal kilt length for you: While kneeling, measure from the top of your waist (where you’d wear your kilt) to the floor. Some say your kilt should just brush against the ground when you are kneeling. Of course personal preference is the rule! Have it YOUR way.
