Customize Your US Army Kilt

Sewn-Down Pleats

For a more tailored and traditional appearance, add sewn-down pleats. The first several inches of the pleats are stitched vertically along the knife edge, creating a slimmer profile around the hips while helping the pleats stay crisp and making them easier to press.

Leather Buckle Straps

If you choose leather buckle straps, Sport Kilt recommends dry cleaning instead of machine washing because repeated washing and drying can dry out the leather.

Get the Right Fit

Unlike ordinary pants, a kilt should be measured where you actually plan to wear the waistband.

Use a measuring tape around your waist at the point where you want the top of the kilt to sit, without holding in your stomach. Sport Kilt notes that this measurement is often approximately two inches larger than a person’s pants size, so measuring rather than guessing from your jeans size is important.

For determining length, kneel and measure from the top of your desired waistband position toward the floor. Traditionally, the bottom of the kilt should come close to the ground while kneeling, although personal preference ultimately determines the right length for you.
