BETTER KNOW YER KILTS

An FAQ for the brave

The Kilt is a Tradition Dating Back Centuries

Worn by nobles, military, and fashionistas of yore, the kilt has been through it all: at times banned, at others celebrated. At Sport Kilt we believe that the kilt is the ultimate garment of fashion and function, and we’ve strived for over 25 years to perfect our version of the Scottish classic.

We started in 1996 as an alternative to the traditional heavy wool kilt, and make our products for people who like to be active and make a statement while they train, compete, play and adventure. We have hundreds of products in our store, but we’re most known for our American-made Sport Kilts.

Wear

How do I wear my Sport Kilt?

The Original Sport Kilt started it all 25 years ago, and the majority of the kilts we’ve made since all take their cues from the traditional fit. With a flat front panel and pleats all around the backside, this kilt wraps around your body and fastens with Velcro. With 4” of adjustability and an elastic waistband, our kilts are made for every body.

How do I measure for a kilt?

You can measure around your waist with a cloth measuring tape and plug that size into our size chart on our sizing page.

We recommend going by your actual waist measurement and not your pants size. Your pants size is usually 2″ smaller than your actual waist measurement. If you don’t have a measuring tape, just add 2″ to your pants size and plug that number into our size chart for your ideal size.

For example, if you wear size 34 pants, then add two (36) and a 36 will fit best in our size large Sport Kilt.

Men with a 28-32″ waist over 5’10” should go with a medium-long, and under 5’10” a medium will be a good length.

How do you sew your pleats?
You asked about our favorite custom feature – our sewn down pleats! We tack down each pleat along the edge, about 6” down from the waistband. That makes the kilt lay flatter across your backside, and lets the pleats break apart lower down on the kilt for a more traditional look and feel. This way also makes the kilt easier to care for since the pleats never lose their knife edge up around the top. Thanks for listening as we nerd out on pleats.

Do I need to wear a belt with my Sport Kilt?

You can choose to add five belt loops to your kilt so you can wear a kilt belt, or your favorite everyday belt. This is purely optional, as our kilts do not require a belt to fit.

How can I give my Sport Kilt a little more flair?

We can sew an extra panel, called a fringe, on the opening side of your kilt and match it to any tartan. This gives you an even more old-school feel.

How do I find my kilt size?

Our sizing chart is a good place to see what size Sport Kilt is your best fit.

Keep in mind that we use actual inches, not pants size, which can be significantly different. If you have any questions, just shoot us an email/chat, or give us a call!

How do I Care for my Sport Kilt?

Care Instructions: You can machine wash your kilt with like colors on cold; tumble dry on low or hang to dry. For the sharpest pleats, press with an iron on 75% heat setting.

Note: If your kilt has leather buckle straps, we recommend dry cleaning as the leather will dry out with machine washing/drying.

What is the Sport Kilt material made of?

We use a special 8oz yarn-dyed poly/viscose material that is machine washable, holds a pleat well, has a nice swing and drape, is non-itchy and great for sports in all of our tartan/plaid kilts.

Our Commando kilts, and some of the specialty fabric camo kilts use a poly/cotton printed twill.

However, custom kilts made just to your measurements like Ultimate, Commando, and custom length kilts, we can not accept returns on so please measure carefully!

On many occasions we can alter your kilt for a small fee if it doesn’t fit you just right, however, we can rarely ever make a kilt longer once it has been cut to a certain length. Other items we do consider to be custom are Works, Original Sport Kilts, Hiking Kilts and Women’s kilts with added custom features such as belt loops in your choice of size, leather buckle straps, fringe, sewn down pleats, and pockets.

If your kilt doesn’t fit you just right, please let us know!

Your website doesn't show the ___ tartan (pick one not on our website). Can you make it?

If we don’t have a tartan/fabric/print that you want made into a kilt in stock, you’re welcome to send us 4-5 yards of material, and we’d be happy to make you a custom Sport Kilt. Give us a call or shoot us an email and we can discuss making you a custom kilt not on our website.

I need a different length kilt than what you offer in your stock model kilt, can you make me a custom length kilt?

Yes, we can make any of our kilts with a custom hem length for just $10 extra. All you need to do is let us know in the “order notes” field when checking out what length you would like. Or you can call in your order to 1-800-451-KILT.

What custom features can you add to my Sport Kilt?

We can add leather or nylon buckle straps to the opening side of your kilt. Both buckles are functional, and add an extra layer of security and adjustability, as well as a more traditional look.

Do Sport Kilts come with pockets?

Traditionally, kilts don’t have pockets. That’s what the sporran is for – the little pouch accessory you can sling around your waist to carry your things. However, if wearing a sporran isn’t an option – like for many Highland Games athletes – we can put two hidden side pockets on your kilt on each side of the flat front panel. They’re deep enough to hold your keys and your phone, and you won’t lose your goods when you sit down.
