Hiking Kilt – Thiarloch

Thiarloch is Gaelic for Western Lake.  Microfiber material for hiking and adventures, made in the USA!

Waist Size *

Using a measuring tape, wrap it around your waist where you'd like the top of your kilt to sit. Don't hold in your stomach!. Usually this measurement is larger than the waist-size of your pants. You might consider giving yourself an extra inch, or so, for comfort. That will be the ideal waist measurement to order.

Please Note: We cannot accept returns or exchanges on any custom made garment. Measure carefully!

Buckle Closure

You can add two 1" wide black leather straps and nickle-plated buckles to the opening end of your Sport Kilt. A functional, traditional looking adjustable double strap.  You can also choose a Nylon Buckle Strap option as well.

While all Sport Kilts are secured with Velcro at the waistband, you can give your kilt that custom look (and added security) by adding buckles and straps.

Belt Loops

Although you don't need a belt to hold up your kilt, we'll be glad to add 'em so you can wear your favorite belt.

Belt loops can also be used to thread your sporran "chain-belt" through. This is the traditional use of belt loops on a kilt.

TIP: Belt Loop size should be at least 1/4" larger than the belt width in order to have room for the belt hardware, e.g., the keeper.

Please note: We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length. Please measure carefully!

Hidden Side Pockets

Now you can have us add 2 hidden side pockets to your Sport Kilt. You won't even know they're there unless you're looking for them, or you've got your hands in your pockets.

A great custom option for those that have to have pockets on their kilts!

Please allow us a couple of days to customize your kilt with pockets before your order ships.

Custom Length *

Use a measuring tape, instead of using your pant size. This will determine your waist measurement.

The ideal kilt length: While kneeling, measure from the top of your waist (where you'd wear your kilt) to the floor. Some say your kilt should just brush against the ground when you are kneeling. Of course personal preference is the rule! Have it YOUR way.

Note:  Ultimate and Commando kilts tend to sit higher on the waist (more like a traditional kilt) than our standrard Sport Kilts. Therefore, you may want to add an extra inch or two in length to compensate. If in doubt, be assured that ninety five percent of the time, our standard size Medium-long, large, XL, abd XXL length of 22.5 inches will fit most guys 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall.

Please Note: We cannot accept returns for customized goods, i.e., belt loops, sewn pleats, custom length. Measure carefully, please!

I purchased one in Thiarloch after having one in Black Watch. Unfortunately, the Thiarlock material is heavier, less breathable, and hotter than the Black Watch material. I more it on a 60 degree day and it was hot. It will be ok in cooler weather, but not what I was expecting or wanting for the summer.

Did a triathalon wearing my Thiarloch Hiking Kilt, and not only was it super comfortable to run in, and easy to put on in the transition area, but I got tons of cheers and smiles.

I have just received my kilt. The 21 inch was 20.5 inches. While this is a minor difference, anyone who knows about kilts know that this is important for the kilt not to look like a kilty (highland dance) or skirt. I am 5’11. The belt loops seem unnecessary as there is a velcro stretchy waist on this kilt. The pocket on the right is blocked by the strap.

Steven – our sincere apologies your kilt was 1/2″ shorter than requested. Our custom sewing team are human and they do make mistakes from time to time. We’d be happy to make you a replacment if you want to send it back to us. We like to think of the buckle straps as a security device for the contents of your right pocket. Of course, you don’t need to add both pockets and buckle straps to your kilt, but if you do, yes there’s going to be one strap over the right pocket.

Wore this kilt hiking in the Andes. Hiked the same trail five years ago and sweat. This time I was completely comfortable. Was worried the locals may object since they are pretty traditional but on the contrary, they all were laudatory and knew I was wearing the “famous Scottish clothing”.

I did a 5 day ultralight backpack trip in the Uintas a few years back, I wore my hiking kilt every day, (after we summitted Kings Peak, during the scramble back down, I had to warn the peeps coming up that I was in kilt mode, not skirt mode. ) I have also wake surfed and paddle boarded in my hiking kilt. Fantastic product, the board-shorts of kilting.

  6. Mark Henderson

Sport Kilt hiking kilts are perfect. Lite, dry fast, rugged. Perfect for hiking, especially in hot weather.

Bought it for hiking long distances on hot days. Now I hate pants.

  8. sportkilt

I bought this Thiarloch Hiker just as Sport Kilt was changing the pattern on its other blue hiker. I was told it was going to be the first one sold in the new design. The pattern and color are perfect. The fabric is light, cool, and wicks away moisture very well. That is a big plus in SW Louisiana. Needless to say it really turned heads during the monthly Fort Polk golf tournament. It didn’t improve my golf game but I felt like a winner on the links. I plan to wear it as often as possible. Thanks Sport Kilt
